Alaskan
Outfitting: About Us
In July 2003, I talked to an old friend for the first
time in years. I listened as he explained how he had created what
is arguably the best Montana fishing site on the Internet - Bigskyfishing.com.
After talking about his site for several hours, I realized this was
how I could live one of my long-time dreams and share my passion for
Alaska at the same time.
Since childhood, I've had a love affair with the outdoors and a desire
to share this love of nature with others. I spent endless hours watching
every nature show on TV, reading every nature article I could find,
and visiting every zoo and nature park I had an opportunity to get
to. With every new thing I learned, came a stronger need to share
what I was discovering. This web page offers a chance to start sharing
those discoveries
.
Then,
in the mid-nineties I planned my once in a lifetime trip to Alaska
with my wife. As fate would have it, as soon as we booked our flights,
work sent me on a ten-day business trip to Anchorage in the middle
of February. I was completely taken by the state. Within a year, I
had returned three times and have made at least one trip annually
ever since.
You can read about our July
2004 trip here.
So, after that conversation with my friend, I spent
a few months researching the possibilities for a web site. I found
two things. First, I found that there were lots of link pages, on-line
brochures, and some personal sites about Alaska. But, there were very
few quality content sites with the kind of in-depth information I
needed when I was planning my trips. Second, I learned about the affiliate
sales business model, which promised a way to make the site self-supporting.
Eventually, with a lot of help from friends and family, I sketched
out the basis of this site. My hope for the site is to create a single
location where people planning to visit Alaska, especially first-timers,
can find the vast array of information they need. At the same time,
I would like to help educate people about the opportunities in the
state and inspire them to experience Alaska.
Also, I would like to help clubs, organizations, and educate the public
about conservation and ecology by offering content related articles
or advertising to promote their causes and services. If you are involved
in a project or club that could benefit from some exposure, let me
know.
Finally, I plan to directly support conservation of Alaska by donating
10% of all proceeds to The Alaskan Chapter of the Nature Conservancy
or other deserving groups or projects. Should this site actually become
more than self supporting I will raise this percentage but, I pledge
to always commit at least 10% toward protection of this great state.
If you don't currently donate to the Conservancy, I invite you to
check them out at Nature.org. They keep
overhead low and focus on protecting habitat by acquisition, which
is probably the only effective way to protect, the last best places
for the future.
Affiliate Sales
I put a lot of research into the merchants I use for affiliate sales
and feel confident that the affiliates I have chosen are the best
for price, quality, and customer service. Below is a brief list of
our affiliates.
Amazon.com - The original affiliate program,
huge selection and incredible prices. The obvious first choice
for an affiliate program.
www.bookcloseouts.com - Remainder books at up to 80% off the
original price. There are some great deals to be had here.
