Circle City 1899

Circle City was established in 1893 to supply the prospectors who discovered and extracted gold on Preacher Creek. The founders named the city Circle City because they believed it was located directly on the Arctic Circle. They were close anyway. This image shows the view from the Yukon River from a steam ship. By the time this photograph was taken, prospectors had already moved off to the Klondike and Nome. Now Circle has less then 100 residents.
