Fairbanks has long been the capital of the Interior. It has always been at the border of gentry and wilderness and this photo does a great job of showing the civilization that grew up on the shores of the Chena River. What it doesn’t show is how thin a veneer this really is. In 1915 this was a town where children waited to watch mushers bringing in the mail and the railroad was still in the future. This is the Fairbanks that is not all that far removed from the present..
