Larry Kaniut at his Best

Cheating Death
by Larry Kaniut

Who must have this book: Anyone who loves true life thrillers or the stories from Alaska magazine.
Who should have this book: Anyone with interest in the adventure of Alaskan outdoors.

ISBN: 0945397615

Most people know Larry Kaniut from his first two books Alaska Bear Tales and More Alaska Bear Tales. For this book, Larry took a vacation from the bear attack stories and branched out into other ways to get into trouble in Alaska.

Larry has a great way with gripping, life and death stories from the state and Alaska continues to give him more material to work with each year. This collection of short stories includes a well-balanced selection of some of the best stories Alaska has to offer. Each story has you spellbound until you get to the end. It is a very quick read and would make great plane reading for the flight out to Alaska. I especially recommend this book if you are flying into Anchorage because you will certainly pass the places where many of these stories took place.

This book is not nearly as big as his later book Danger Stalks the Land but has the same thriller qualities going for it. If you like this book, be sure to check out the other. In fact if you really like true life adventure stories, I would recommend getting the other book first. It contains a lot more stories but there is no overlap between the two books. So if you love one, the other book will offer more of the same.

Overview

The book contains 18 chapters, each of which is an incredible tale of human struggle and survival. The stories are very diverse and contain plane crashes, boat sinkings, mountain climbing falls, moose attacks, strandings, rafting accidents and even a life an death struggle with an octopus.

The story of the mountain climbers that survived a fall by one member and then multiple avalanches that covered them repeatedly and stole their gear was unbelievable. Each story does a great job of putting you in the shoes of the people in trouble as they suck you in. And for those who have read his first two books, you will be happy to know there is only one bear story and it doesn’t include a mauling.

All in all, a very entertaining and often educational book. If you have read and enjoyed Kaniut’s other books you will love this one. If you haven’t read any of his books before, this is as good as any of them to try.
