larry Kaniut Danger Stalks the LandLarry Kaniut is the king of true-life Alaskan survival stories. He's made an industry of bear attacks and miraculous struggles between man and nature. The result is a library of books full of white-knuckled reading full of riveting stories. You just can't put them down until you see how they turn out. It makes you both glad to be in a warm secure place and makes you want to get out into the Alaskan wilderness at the same time.

This book is a collection of Alaskan classics. Some were pulled from headlines, some were written by those involved, and some are Alaskan legends. For example, if you've spent any time near the Cook Inlet you have heard the story of the duck hunter who became trapped in the tidal mud and drowned in the incoming tide. Kaniut tracked down the people who were there and got the real story. In many of the stories he disproves the myths that has grown up from years of retelling.

The individual stories were carefully selected to represent a wide variety of themes. A few of the stories do get somewhat repetitive. There are multiple downed bush plane stories. But then again, if you read the Alaskan newspapers, you get the same feeling of déjà vu.

With the thrills, come lessons about always being prepared. One amazing thing about the book is that the majority of these stories do not come from the isolated wilderness but mostly within just a few miles of the road. I read it just before a recent trip to Alaska and it really changed the landscapes I was driving through. The trip down the Seward Highway turned to realizing - that's where that lady was airlifted out of, that was where the newlyweds drowned, that's where a young man lost his hunting buddy. It points out that this is Alaska and your decisions can be as important as life and death here.
