This
book really is a must for anyone planning their first self-guided
trip or just dreaming about fishing Alaska. This book will definitely
get you from the dreaming stage to the planning and going stages.
When I read this book I was surprised by how closely the authors first
trips resembled mine. We both made the same mistakes, but luckily,
I didn’t come home with a freezer full of chum salmon. Amazingly,
we also came to nearly all the same solutions to the problems we encountered.
If you are planning your first trip to Alaska and want to keep costs
down and avoid guide services, then get this book. You will definitely
save money and learn from our mistakes. I’m sure that each year,
there are hundreds of people who repeat the same mistakes we made.
Twelve dollars here can teach you as much as several $1200 trips taught
me.
Overview
The book is well illustrated and very readable, but densely packed
with suggestions and facts. It may be overwhelming if read cover to
cover in one sitting. But the author has done a good job of dividing
the book into several clear stages. Read thorugh it once, then go
back section by section and work through the stages and anyone can
come up with an affordable Alaskan fishing trip.
Note, the author describes a very specific type of fishing trip that
is aimed at keeping costs down and filling the freezer back home.
To keep costs down and planning easy, he concentrates on fishing the
highway systems around Anchorage. He steers you to the best fishing
spots for fishing action and to fill your cooler – focusing
on Sockeye, Coho, and Pink Salmon (pinks for the action not food.)
This book is full of extremely specific suggestions. For example,
he suggests the best way to pack your luggage coming and going to
Alaska. He also suggests the use of credit cards with travel awards
to earn free tickets (neither of us has actually paid for air fare
to Alaska for years.) The book is not for the veteran Alaskan
fisherman, it is aimed toward the first or second
time visitor. Even veteran fisherman may gain some ideas
from reading this book, but those planning their first trip, this
book will pay for itself many times over.
Areas covered by the book include; planning, purchasing airfare, rental
cars, food in Alaska, what fish to target, timing, fishing locations
to try, equipment, how to take care of your catch and much more. This
book has everything someone planning their first trip would need to
know.
Author
The author is a non-Alaskan native who has been making
regular trips to Alaska since 1988. Over the years, he has perfected
his process for catching a lot of fish and bringing a freezer full
of fillets home.
