This
is it! If you are planning to fish Alaska, get this book.
I have been waiting for this book for over six years, and it has definitely
been worth the wait. The subtitle says it all – The Ultimate
Angler’s Guide. This edition easily lives up to that billing.
The book is densely packed with all the information you will need
for a lifetime of Alaskan fishing. If you are familiar with the second
edition you will recognize a lot of the content but it is quickly
obvious that areas have been expanded and everything has been updated.
But where this edition is vastly improved from the Second edition
is in design and illustration. The book is packed with amazing pictures
and great graphics.
The book’s high quality, glossy pages give a rich feel to the
book and make the illustrations pop. 450 pages, each packed densly
with information, may make the book seem intimidating but the easy
layout makes it easy to flip to the species, technique or location
you want to read about. Otherwise just flipping through the book,
I seem to find something new every time. It is an encyclopedic reference
book to the entire state that you’ll find yourself returning
to time and time again.
Overview
The book is basically broken into two parts; one covering
17 Alaskan gamefish and the other covering over 300 fishing locations.
The gamefish section covers nearly every species you could think of.
If you nit-pick you can point out the Burbot and Whitefish are missing,
but every species a visiting angler would target is covered in this
book. The species covered include all salmon, halibut, all trouts,
all char species, sheefish, ling cod, salmon shark, pike, grayling
and more.
Each species is illustrated with photos and maps. Each section has
a description of the fish, range and abundance information, life history,
fishing techniques, gear and a great overview of the species. The
species coverage is very thorough and useful.
The location guides are broken into six regions, each with an overview
section for the region. The best fishing locations in each region
are covered in small entries that rank the fishing, list how to access,
and tell highlights of fishing each body of water. The maps in the
third edition are much improved over the second edition.
