Cruises and Frommer’s guides work very well together. Because
of the limited time you will have in each port of call, you will need
to organize your time to make sure you see what you want to at each
stop. Personally, my favorite experiences in Alaska have been the
times when we just took our time at a location and stumbled into cafes
or museums. There is satisfaction in discovering places on your own.
But with eight hours in a port, you had better know what you want
to do so you don’t find out what you missed after you have re-boarded.
Frommer’s makes great city guides and this is no exception.
It will tell you what sights, restaurants and are in each port of
call. What it won’t do is go deeply into the history or cultures
of a location. So if you are looking for that, you may want to get
a supplement to this book.
If you are planning your trip, a large section of this book is dedicated
to describing the cruise lines and individual ships. There is plenty
of advice on the decisions you will have to make.
The book is a nice size and can be easily carried with you. In general,
this is a good book for pointing you in the direction to go but I
suspect there might be a better resource out there. I’ll list
it here when I find it.
