No
matter what your activity will be in Alaska, you will undoubtedly
need a map. Anyone who lives in the state should get an up to date
gazetteer. Others may be able to get by with just a map. I have listed
some of the best maps available below.
The Delorme gazetteers are great resources for every kind of outdoor
enthusiasts. I have used them in several states for fishing, hunting,
hiking, photography, birdwatching and finding weddings. The gazetteer
contains detailed topographical maps covering the entire state. I
wouldn’t suggest replacing USGS topographical maps for hiking
and hunting in very specific areas where fine detailed maps are necessary,
but the gazetteer gives you plenty of detail for initial trip planning.
Most of the maps are 1:300,000 scale although it goes to 1:1,400,000
for the roadlesss areas of the north and west. All maps are marked
for GPS although the scales make guesstimating a little hard.
Delorme specifically targets the outdoorsman with this gazetteer series,
making sure to mark every wildlife refuge, national park, scenic drive,
float tirp and major fishing and camping opportunity. I have also
found mine to be a great resource to have around when reading about
the state. Often I find myself looking up bush villages in the index
in the back when I read about one.
The gazetteer does a passable job of showing the entire
Alaskan road system, which for the most part isn’t that big
a feat. There are more detailed maps for the major cities but the
coverage of rural roads is pretty good. Definitely good enough to
guide you to river crossings for fishing or into hunting areas.
This is a short review, but I really can’t say enough about
having a copy in the car or around the house. It really is a lot of
information in one package. And the current edition was created in
2004 for it is very up to date.
Publisher
Delorme has created gazetteers for all fifty states
now, always with a special concern for the outdoorsman. Over the years
I have gotten gazetteers for several states and never been disappointed
(except when they hadn’t released the state I was looking for.
