I would have to say I was a little disappointed when I first got this book in the mail. I was expecting to get another white-knuckled collection of thrillers from Larry Kaniut and what I received was a collection of excerpts other books. But if I was disappointed when I received it, I was happy when I finished it. This is by far my favorite compilation of Alaskan literature.

One good sign is that when I finished the book, my reading wish list had grown by ten books (six of which I have since gotten and read.) Unlike many compilations floating around, most of the books quoted in this book are very recent. Most books included were written within he last five years, so you are not getting the typical excerpts from John Muir etc.

If you are looking for good Alaska related reading, definitely get this book, I’m sure you will also end up tracking down many of the books sampled here. If you are looking for more Larry Kaniut tales, there are few here, but most were previously printed in Cheating Death and Danger Stalks the Land.

Overview

The book is split into Seven Sections, each containing three to six excerpts from other books. The sections include; Fishing for Adventure, Wilderness People Can Be Wilder than the Wildlife, Bush Pilots-The Lifeline of Alaska, The Wildlife is Really Wild, Conservation, Alaska’s Dogs, and Native Voices.

The stories are well chosen for their theme. Most are eight to twenty pages long and well balanced. Some of the great books that were quoted in this book are; Tales of Alaska’s Bush Rat Governor, Raising Ourselves, Coming Back Alive, The Last Light Breaking and Iditarod Classics. I recommend all of these and more.
