Guide to Fishing the Anchorage Area

It’s like they say. Anchorage is not Alaska, but is just a twenty minute drive from it. For the most part you should just use Anchorage as a gateway to the rest of Alaska, not your end destination. However, if you are limited to fishing in the Anchorage area, or if you live in the city, you can easily find bits of Alaska seeping into the cities sprawl.

This section covers most of the fishable waters in and around the Anchorage area. If you are only going to be in town for a day, check our one day suggestions. If you will be spending time in Anchorage and have a car and some time, check our nearby suggestions to get closer to the “real” Alaska. The area offers some great river and stream fishing and numerous stocked fishing lakes, but due to the silted shallow nature of the Upper Cook Inlet, there is no real saltwater fishing in the area.

Anchorage rivers and streams offer great fishing for all five salmon, rainbow trout and dolly varden. Click on the links above for full descriptions of each location.
