Walking the muddy banks of Bird Creek

This is not the seen you will get when the Silvers start running again on Bird Creek. The creek is well known to Alaskan residents and visitors alike. It's closeness to Anchorage makes it a very popular destination when the silvers come in. Also, it represents a much more natural alternative to fishing Ship Creek.

The height of the tidal mud and the bridge do a good job of showing how much the tides swing up and down on Turnagain Arm. At low tide the stream runs hundreds of yards below the bridge before it hits salt water. At high tide, the saltwater comes up just below the bridge. The difference in appearance of the stream between high and low tides is amazing. Note, Be careful not to venture out onto the mud flats at low tide. It is very easy to get mired in the mud. With the fast moving tides, this is deadly serious.
