Eklutna River Fish Species

Beyond Silver Salmon, there is a small run of Chum Salmon and some smaller Dolly Varden present in the Eklutna river. There is a remote possibility of catching a Sockeye in the river, but is unlikely. The Sockeyes are a good candidate for restocking though if the dams are ever removed and water flows from the mouth of the Eklutna River to the Eklutna Lake. River systems with lakes are often associated with strong Sockeye runs.

Fishing Eklutna River Chum Salmon

A small run of Chum Salmon enters the Eklutna River in the middle of July and continues through the month of August. This is not a strong run. If you are looking for Chums in the Anchorage area, you would be better served looking at Bird Creek.

If you do fish for Chums on the Eklutna River, remember that Chums are strong fighters and willing strikers. Use your standard Chum equipment. Usually people use large flashy lures or flies for Chums, you might want extra flash for the silted waters of the Eklutna.

Fishing Eklutna River Dolly Varden

There are a small number of Dolly Varden that enter the Eklutna River, but they tend to be on the smaller side, averaging 7-10 inches. They tend to roughly follow the salmon spawning, entering the river in early July and staying through October. If you are looking to catch Dollies, you might have better luck up the road in the Mat-Su valley or on the Kenai Peninsula. There aren’t too many sure fire streams in the Anchorage area.
