Eklutna Tailrace Fishing Dangers

There aren’t too many concerns when fishing the Eklutna Tailrace. Being on the road system and within easy driving distances of Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer and Wasilla it is pretty safe. Even getting lost is pretty hard to do with the Knik River and Old Glenn Highway to use as landmarks.

Bears

There is a modest chance of encountering bears while fishing the Eklutna Tailrace. Because this is a recent fishery with no history of fish before 2003, bears have not had time to realize this is a place to pick up salmon. More likely though is that human traffic and improperly handled garbage and fish will be what will draw bears to the area. So far, I have heard no reports of bear problems at the tailrace. With proper management of cleaned fish and garbage, this should not change.

Combat Fishing

A King and Silver Salmon fishery close to the road system and major tourist and urban areas has all the makings of a combat fishing location. If you do find yourself shoulder to shoulder at the tailrace, be sure to take all the proper combat fishing precautions. Be sure to fish in the same manner as those around you and be courteous. Polarized sun glasses are recommended for eye protection if there are crowds.
