The Eklutna Tailrace is about a 40-minute drive north
of Anchorage. From the North it is about a 20-minute drive from Palmer
or Wasilla. Except for Ship Creek the Eklutna Tailrace is the closest
King Salmon fishery to Anchorage.
Because of the nature of the Eklutna Tailrace, there is
only one access point
at mile 3.6 of the Old Glenn Highway. All fishing must be done along
a short stretch of water from 100 feet downstream of the Old Glenn Highway
to the mouth of the tailrace where it meets the Knik River. You are
allowed to fish for kings year round within a half mile of the tailrace
(although it takes a strong sense of luck outside the run in May-July.)
You can access the Knik River by walking down the tailrace.
A new 77 spot parking lot has been built at the Tailrace.
Turn west into the parking lot that is just South of the bridge ove
the tailrace. The parking lot is well marked.
Gas
The nearest available gas is 6 miles south on the Glenn
Highway in Peters Creek or further south in Eagle River. Gas is also
available in Palmer,
15 miles East on the Old Glenn Highway or in Wasilla,
15 miles north up the Glenn Highway.
Food
Food is just like gas, either 6 miles south on the Glenn
Highway in Peters Creek or head twenty minutes north to Palmer or
Wasilla. I don't have any stellar recommendations. Wasilla does have
a lot of fast food choices. Perhaps the best plan would be to bring
a picnic and eat either at the tailrace, or the Eklutna Lake campground.
Lodging
There are hotels available in
Wasilla,
Palmer and Eagle River. Also there is a campground at Eklutna Lake.
Other Area Fishing
The Eklutna Tailrace is at the dividing line between
the Anchorage Area and the Mat-Su Valley. To the south there are opportunities
at Eklutna Lake, Eagle River, as well as streams and lakes in and
around Anchorage like Ship
Creek and Bird Creek.
To the north are some fantastic possibilities in the Mat-Su Valley,
like Jim Creek.
Other Area Attractions
There are a few worthwhile things to see in the area
around the Tailrace. Closest would be the Athabascan community of
Eklutna.
The
Eklutna Historical Park preserves the heritage of the community.
There is a cemetery of traditional Spirit Houses here that are featured
in many guide books.
East
of the Tailrace on the Old Glenn Highway there is the Reindeer
Farm where you can pet and feed reindeer (or perhaps your family
can drop you off at the Tailrace and spend some time with the reindeer.)
Also there is Hunter
Creek Outfitters 4.5 miles east of the Tailrace where you can
catch an airboat to their wilderness camp.
Also to the north are the towns of Palmer and Wasilla.
