This is the outlet from the Eklutna power plant at the head of the
tailrace. The water comes down a tunnel through the mountain behind
the powerstation, from Eklutna lake. Gravity feeds it through the
turbines in the plant and creates energy for the Anchorage, Mat-Su
area. It is not a perfect trade-off to have an artificial run at the
tailrace replacing what could potentially be a decent run of Reds
on the Eklutna River. But development demands compromises.
The water that runs through the power plant used to flow out of Lake
Eklutna into the Eklutna River. It supported decent runs of salmon
and is an ideal scenario for Sockeyes. The Lake/River combination
is typically very good habitat for Sockeyes. If you get a chance,
visit Lake Eklutna and see how low the water is. Currently, no water
goes over the spillway on the lake, stopping all hope of runs into
the lake.
You will quickly recognize the turquoise colored water you see here.
