About the Run

The Eklutna Tailrace Silver Salmon run is an artificial terminal fishery created by the Alaskan Department of Fish and Game. Much like the King run, the silver run has been created to give sportfishermen an easily accessible fishery and to take some of the pressure off of other, wild Silver Salmon stocks in the upper Cook Inlet. This fishery should produce some good sport and table fare from here on out.

The ADFG started stocking the tailrace with Silver Salmon smolt in 2000 under the Urban Coho Salmon program. They have been stocking about 120,000 smolt each year since then. The target number of returning adult Silver Salmon should be around 7500. Unlike the King salmon with there multilple years of oceanic existence, Silver Salmon return during their second summer of salt water living. So, the Silver Salmon returns are already about at their peaks.

Because this is a terminal fishery, no escapement is needed for wild reproduction.

When to Fish

The ADFG is currently using Silver Salmon smolt from Jim Creek so the timing of their return should be very close to the runs on the Jim and other waters in the upper Cook Inlet. Silvers start showing up during July and peak in Late July through August. Fish should continue to come through until October.

Regulations

The Eklutna Tailrace is open to Salmon fishing year round. You may keep 3 salmon per day/3 in possession (not including Kings). Silver Salmon are also open for most other waters around the tailrace. Again though, being open doesn’t mean much outside the period when they are running.

The Tailrace is open to both bait and lures.
