A great resource for the selfguided car fisherman. The water coverage is amazingly complete. A must for the long-haul tourists and residents alike.

Russian River Directions and Facilities

Russian River Access Map

One of the reasons that the Russian River is crowded is because is a relatively short drive from Anchorage or anywhere on the Kenai Peninsula. This means that a full third of the population of Alaska can easily jump in the car and head down and fill their coolers up with some of the best tasting salmon in the world.

Driving Instructions

Driving instructions are given from Anchorage.
1. Head South on the Seward Highway.
2. At milepost 36 on the Seward Highway turn west onto the Sterling Highway
3. Drive 15 miles through Cooper's Landing to the Russian River area.
4. Turn into the campground at mile 52.7 or the Sportsman Landing at mile 55

To get there from Homer or the Kenai/Soldotna, just take the Sterling Highway east to the mileposts mentioned above. The Russian River is very easy to find and, barring slow moving RV's, the roads are great and fast. Enjoy the scenery on the way.

Russian River Access

There is great access to the Russian Rivers. For the most part, fishermen tend to stick to the Confluence on the Kenai River which is just off the road. From the parking area, you can easily get to any of the areas open on the North side of the river, or take the Russian river Ferry to the south shore for even more, and sometime better, fishing opportunities.

If you would like to walk up the Russian River for more private fishing, the entire length is accessible by trails that run along the Eastern edge of the river. This trail can be accessed from several small trails that run from the campground, or from the Russian Lakes Trailhead. There is about a two mile hike from the trailhead to the falls, but once there, you should be pretty much by yourself. Just be sure to fish 600 yards below the sanctuary at the falls. From there you can work your way all the way back to the campgrounds fishing as you go.

Russian River Parking

There is a day use parking lot maintainted right at the confluence of the Russian River, there is a small fee to park for the day and it will put you right on top of the fish. Otherwise there is free parking along the highway and a series of pull-offs, but be careful, there is a lot of traffic through this area and we have had to help at least one car that got high-centered on the shoulder.

Also, if you are planning on hiking in to the upper stretches of the river, there is a day use parking area at the trailhead.

Russian River Facilities

Gas

There is gas available in Coopers Landing, just a few miles east of the Russian River on the Sterling Highway. Also, heading west, you will be able to find gas in the town of Sterling. Be careful to have enough gas in your tank when heading out for Anchorage or Seward. There are few gas stations outside of Coopers Landing.

Food

There are a few restaurants in Cooper's Landing. Our personal suggestion is ***** , they have great burgers and a good place to grab a beer after a day of fishing. But be careful, it is easy to fish until midnight or beyond and find out that all restaurants have closed down.
