Home > Fishing > Locations > Kenai Peninsula > Russian River > Other FishOther Russian River FishingBe aware, the entire Russian River is closed to King Salmon fishing throughout the year. Any King Salmon caught, or any Rainbow Trout of Dolly Varden that is caught during their spawing closure from the First of May until mid-June, must be released and returned to the water immediately. Be sure to check regulations for more details. Russian River Pink Salmon Run
In even years, Pink Salmon are not uncommon at the confluence
or even in the Russian River itself. However, most of the huge numbers
that enter the Kenai spawn below Skilak Lake so you will not see the
hordes you can see lower on the Kenai.
If you do manage to catch any and decide to keep them, there is a liberal limit of 6 fish per day and 6 in possession. But because of the distance from the sea, the meat quality for the pinks will be a little iffy. Note: Alaskan Sportfishing regulations change greatly from year to year, even day to day with emergency orders. Be sure to always check for the most up to date regulations from the ADFG.

Dolly Varden are year-round residents of the Russian River, however fall is the time for larger fish. August to October is the time for trophies in the upper reaches of the Kenai River system. They can reach up to 7 pounds and will put up a very nice fight for you. There is a limit of one fish under 16 inches per day. Also note that there is a closure from May 1st through mid-June on both Dollies and Rainbows.
Try an egg fly below spawning salmon in late summer. Or
try fishing for them before the May 1st closure or after the salmon
have spawned out. It is possible you may have the river to yourself.
Which seems pretty strange to anyone who has fished here during the
Sockeye run.

This is your chance to get your fly rod out on the Russian River. Both
Dolly Varden and Rainbows can be taken on fly equipment. But be warned,
sixty thousand angler days on the river does make the fish a little
wary of presentations. But since 95% of all the angling pressure is
placed on Sockeyes and Silvers, you can have some very good luck fishing
for trout and char.
Spin Casting – Use a 5 to 7.5 foot trout rod with 6-8 pound test.
Note: flyfishing only regulations. When in effect, be sure to use a fly with a hook gap of less than 3/8”Flyfishing – 5-7 weight rod, 8 or 9 feet in length. Use 6-10 pound sinking tippets.
