The dam on Ship Creek Anchorage Alaska

Ship Creek Dam

Here is the dam that marks the end of the fishable section of Ship Creek. There is no salmon fishing allowed above the cable one hundred feet below the dam. It is well marked, and easy to see when you are fishing the creek. Above the dam, only catch and release trout fishing is allowed.

Between the dam and the demarcation cable is a fish sanctuary where the salmon that survive the Ship Creek gauntlet pile up. On the north side of the dam, there is a small and inadequate fish ladder that allows some of the salmon to go up river and return to the hatcheries where they were raised.

Unfortunately, the dam does not allow salmon to come and go between the fresh and salt waters and restricts habitat on the creek. The dam has become one of the main targets of Ship Creek Unplugged, a group that is trying to return Ship Creek to its natural flow.
