Here is a closer view of the Ship Creek dam that marks the end of
the gauntlet for spawning salmon. If they can manage to find their
way through the fish ladder, they may be lucky enough to make it to
the weirs at the hatcheries upstream and then be stripped by a fishery
technician so a new generation may be fertilized in the same bucket
they were conceived in.
Alright, it may not be the most natural fishery in the world but
the action is good in season. There is some natural reproduction that
goes on in the stream though. If the obstructions are removed, there
is hope that natural spawning will increase. But due to the extreme
urban fishing presssures on Ship Creek, this will always be at least
an artificially augmented fishery.
