Fishing the Road System

The Highway Angler

By Gunnar Pedersen

A great resource for the selfguided car fisherman. The water coverage is amazingly complete. A must for the long-haul tourists and residents alike.

Ship Creek News

Ship Creek King Salmon Derby is renamed, but back on.

6/1/05 They will no longer be called the IBEW derbies. Now they are the Downtown Soup Kitchen's Slammin’ Salmon King and Silver Salmon Derbies. Strange name but a very happy developement for Ship Creek anglers. Unless of course you were hoping for less crowds this summer. The dates for the derbies will be:

King Salmon June 3rd - June 12th
Silver Salmon August 5th - August 14th

Tickets will be sold at the Ship Creek bait shops and all proceeds will go to the downtown Soup Kitchen.

Ship Creek King Salmon Derby off for 2005

5/5/05 It sounds like the bridge where the culverts have been removed will be under construction through July. The old fishing hole at the culverts will now be broad fast moving riffles so this traditional combat fishing spot will be gone.

5/1/05 It looks official, there will not be a King Salmon Derby on Ship Creek this summer. There is an article at ADN.com. Basically, no one has stepped up to take the reigns on the tournament. The good news is that the crowds should be down a lot. The bad news, it was a lot of fun.

Culverts Removed from Ship Creek

3/2005 Crews have begun removing the culverts nearest to the Knik inlet. This is the first step in returning Ship Creek to a more natural character. Crews started pulling out the culverts in early March and should be done before the Kings start arriving in May.

There has been some talk on chat boards that this change will decrease fishing success because the salmon will no longer be caught in the choke points the culverts created. We’ll see what happens. There will be some channel and structure changes made so it is still too early to see if anything changes.

The one thing that should change is, now the high tides should roll in with less interuption.

Ship Creek Salmon Derbies in Jeopardy

11/2004 The Anchorage Community Services who have manned and organized the derbies for the last 11 years is pulling out of the derby business. The volunteers have been key to keeping the derbies going and without someone stepping forward, the derbies for the summer of 2005 are in jeopardy. I'll try to keep the news of this up to date.
