Day 1: July 4th
Arriving Anchorage, Turnagain Arm
Whittier

Arrived in Anchorage at noon. Had a long talk with a couple from Bowling Green, Ohio. He worked in the Jeep Liberty assembly plant there. Went to Potter Marsh and got a few photos despite a high wind. Ran into some people from Anchorage who were panning for gold in the Indian Creek and they offered me a beer. They also showed what happens when you get the poison from the Cow Parsnip in your blood stream.

The Cow Parsnip contains a photo sensitive chemical that burns your skin when exposed to sunlight. When in the blood stream it causes burns where ever sun hits you skin. The man had burns all up and down his arms and apparently it will be a problem for some years to come.

Stopped at a lot of road side stops then found out there was going to be a bore tide at 7:00 so I ran to Girwood and the Cow Something Mine. Took some photo and got back in time to see kayakers and surfers take on the bore tide.

There was a big group waiting for the bore tide to come in and several groups of surfers and kayakers lined up to catch the wave.

Ended up the day in in Whittier where the local fire department (and all inhabitants were shooting off fireworks. To make up for the lack of darkness, they shot off a lot of parachute type fireworks which streamed colored smoke.
