Day 2: July 5th

After a night a sleeping through bottle rockets shot all over the camping ground (recently bulldozed to expose new sharp rocks) I drove through town to get a few more shots. A Princess ship arrived in port during the night and I wanted to capture more of the "beauty" of Whittier.

The town is full of semi-abandoned vehicles, muldering buildings and failing development ideas. The only thing the town seems to have gained from the car tunnel is the ability to get out and a huge parking lot for cruise and ferry passengers.

After leaving Whittier, I hiked a short trail because bears had been seen there. Also, I visited the Portage Glacier visitor center and the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center to watch a Princess bus run off the road and Japanese tourist try to get moose to eat popcorn. The day was pretty miserable so I decided to spend it panning for gold in Hope. Once I got there there sun came out and the day was beautiful. Only found some small pieces of flour gold though.Did find the secret to finding better gold though. Simply break the law and high bank. Others were finding quite a bit that way.

By the way Tim, here is the rental car. A Ford Focus. It will just barely carry our stuff so you may want to pack even lighter.

I will throw in the only picture I have taken of myselfe too. I had one more but it made me look too fat.

I ended the day on the shores of Lake Kenai at the Quartz Creek campground. Weather has been great for tent camping. Which is nice, especially for the budget, not so good for the back.
