Day 5: July 8th

Starting Homer

Worst night of sleep I have ever had in Alaska. Head started stuffing up completely. Bought some Kleenex last night but nose is dripping like a faucet. To make things better, last night was free rap night at the next tent over. They ran a loop tape from 1:00 AM until 4:00 AM and rapped over it. Lots of f-enheimers and n-bombs, steadily getting louder as they got more (messed up).

Sittin in Homer
In the Middle of nowhere
Here with my (slang for black people)
Our neighbors (mess) with us
An' they gonna (messin) learn betta...

Parts were actually entertaining. Then to make things better, at 7:00 AM we were all treated to Homer 911 when SWAT teams rushed a camper and store front next to me. 7 vested assault team members and some DEA guys stood around but apparently the suspected drug dealers were not around. Apparently they weren't just selling Indian Tacos at the Alaskashak. Here is the view from my tent this morning.

Just missed the rapping tent it is the just to the left of the dock. The only scary part of this night was this police officer unloading his assault shot gun while I was taking my tent down. the barrel kept swinging toward me as he worked out a jammed shell.

Decided it was best to leave town. Headed north to photograph the fishing rivers and streams of the area. They have really changed Since the last time I had fished them. Apparently the floods of last year or the year before really tore them up. Here is the place where Andy taught me how to poach salmon. The rivers were just full of King Salmon just lazing around like so many carp back home.

To Andy's credit, it is much better marked now.

Went further north and decided I had better sleep or not drive so I parked and took a quick nap in the car, to be woken up by the park host. Was busted for non-payment at another SRA when I popped out of the car for some quick photos. Headed further north and watched the tractors bring in the charter boats.

Spotted a brown bear high above Tern Lake. Photographed my way south along the Seward highway and got to Seward at 10 with enough time book a charter, get a shower and find a place between a bunch of RV's to pitch my tent on the gravel.

In all I felt pretty crappy all day.
